The Taleban in Afghanistan has confirmed that the movement's top operational commander was killed during a clash with U.S. and Afghan forces.

Taleban spokesmen told several news agencies that Mullah Dadullah was killed Saturday in southern Afghanistan.

NATO officials say the death of Dadullah is a "serious blow" to the Taleban insurgency.

He was killed in Helmand province during a U.S.-led operation, supported by NATO forces.

Dadullah is blamed for deadly attacks on Afghan and international forces, beheadings, and the kidnapping of foreigners.

He is one of the highest-ranking Taleban leaders to be killed since U.S.-led forces pushed the Taleban from power in Afghanistan in 2001.
